Jewellery Care

A common question I receive is, "Will my jewelry tarnish?" The simple answer is yes, but it's not necessarily negative. Our jewelry is made of .925 sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. Copper is added to give the jewelry sufficient hardness for wearability. However, copper does oxidize in humid conditions, which is typical for everyday use.

Fortunately, you can significantly minimize tarnishing by following some basic jewelry care guidelines.

Water alone won't harm sterling silver, but the water we encounter daily isn't pure. Chemicals and contaminants in water can cause silver to tarnish and appear dull, so it's crucial to understand water's effects. It's not advisable to shower with your jewelry on, but an occasional exposure won't cause permanent damage. Just be sure to dry it thoroughly. Always remove jewelry before swimming since chlorine is harsh and will quickly tarnish silver. More so in hot tubs where the heat intensifies the chemical reaction. Sulfur in natural hot springs is particularly damaging to silver, so it's best to avoid it entirely. Additionally, chemicals in lotions and perfumes can tarnish your jewelry. Apply them first, allow them to dry, wash your hands, and then wear your jewelry. This practice can significantly preserve your silver's shine.

Another important tip is proper jewelry storage. Air exposure can tarnish delicate silver. Avoid leaving it on your nightstand, in an open jewelry chest, or in your purse or drawer. Storing silver in individual, air-tight bags with anti-tarnish properties is ideal. These bags prevent air exposure and maintain the jewelry's luster and brilliance. Those silica gel packets that come with new purses or shoes? They're excellent for anti-tarnish protection. Place one in each bag for extra moisture absorption.
